TMJ (Tempro-Mandibular Joint Dysfunction)

Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), also called "TMJ", encompass a group of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular conditions that involve the temporomandibular joints (TMJs), the masticatory muscles and all  associated tissues.  The signs and symptoms associated with these disorders are diverse., and may include difficulties with chewing, speaking and other orofacial functions.  They are also frequently  asscociated with acute or persistent pain.

The issue of temporomandibular disorders is well known for being one of the more  controversial topics in the field of dentistry.  Literature produced during the past 25 ot 30 years has pointed the profession in the direction of a scientifically supported general consensus.

For the diagnosis and treatment of Temporomandibular joint and muscle disorders we subscribe to the recommendations and information supplied by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR). This is the federal government's (United States) lead agency for scientific research on oral, dental and craniofacial health and disease.   NIDCR is on one of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The NIDCR website clearly presents such information.  Visit the site to get more information.

Another valuable source of scientifically supported information is the Patient Information portion of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain's web site

It is important for anyone experiencing the symptoms of TMJ to visit the dentist for an exact diagnosis.
